We are far from the first family to follow this route. It is an adventure, undoubtedly, but a family-friendly one. It is estimated that about 10 yachts take on this challenge out of Europe every year. A journalist named Thomas Siffer made this route popular in his home country of Flanders when he sailed it with his wife and daughter (and wrote a delicious book about it, which has not been translated unfortunately).
The route makes optimum use of prevailing winds and currents. We will sail mainly downwind.
